A bit about Donald Sutherland and a bit about life.
I was absolutely riveted by his performance no matter how small the role. The Great Train Robbery, The Eagle has landed, M*A*S*H, so many more..
He was at his peak when he played the role of Bill Bowerman, the athletic coach and founder of Nike/inventor of the famous waffle sole, in the film 'Without Limits'. I learnt a lot about life from watching Prefontaine in the film. So much so that I visited the place where he crashed his car during my visit to Eugene last year.
My life took a turn with the revelation from Prefontaine (see this speech) that the only person I was competing with in life was myself. That all I had to do was to be better than I was yesterday. And in these incremental improvements, be it in attributes such as physical fitness, emotional stability, financial security, relationships, my spiritual development, would make the 1.1 version easier to live with than the 1.0 version yesterday. It also makes me look forward to being 1.2 tomorrow.. In weightlifting terms, all I need to focus on is what I have control over; my next rep, as my physical trainer/mentor Bill Decker is fond of saying.
Rest in peace, Donald Sutherland.
